The Institute's Public Safety and Emergency Prepardness Policy Committee, chaired by PA Senator Randy Vulakovich and Mr. Renny Clark, Interim Executive Director of the Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority (ICA), is developing a forum that will build consensus, collaboration, and mutual trust between law enforcement officers, municipal leaders, and community leaders. The aim of the committee is to acknowledge critical and emerging issues in policing to promote continuous improvement to our law enforcement environment for both officers and residents. The forum will address challenges and barriers to policing as identified by active police officers, and will offer presentations, discussion, and policy options based on national best practices.
To inform the development of this program, the Institute will host five roundtable (focus group) discussions with police departments in Allegheny County. These discussions will identify issues of concern and better inform the Insitute about our region’s policing environment. Potential discussion topics include mental health crisis intervention, media coverage and the impact on community relations, and policing as an occupation.
